yes i know the song is called Africa but this is actually a great video that talks about the continent of Africa rather than the personal romance. he said that Africa is a beautiful place but also very dangerous which he based off in the lyrics saying he can just imagine how it would be. But What actually caught my eye where the instruments used in this video to make the song. during the beginning of the music us can hear jungle like music that come from a electronic keyboard. the instruments that caught my eye where congas, marimbas, and an iconic harmony creating a unique texture within a conventional pop song structure.(https://hwsmusiccriticism.wordpress.com/2017/10/03/africa-by-toto/)

in this video the Togolese music includes a great variety of percussion-led dance music. Songs and music are used in rituals and religious ceremonies, to pass down stories from generation to generation, as well as to sing and dance to. during this video what i saw some of the instruments we talked about in class like the talking drum,Balaton and a kora. the kora is one that we have recently talked about which is very hard to play, its played like a harp. Sona jobarteh was one of the first woman to play the kora professionally. this just related back to this video because of the instruments and in the video we saw of Sona the band was playing some of these instruments.

this is one of my favorite songs of all time because it has many famous artist to sing the song 'we are the world" this was especially for Africa.this song made so much money and they gave the money to africa for help, so basically a fundraiser almost. what they used to make this song were the instruments were drums, pianos and strings were the mains. the genre for this music was was a sort of pop because when each person sang they sang it with a diffrent kind of tone. Which in other words each person had there own way of how they wanted it to sound. This is a very good example for everyone to come together.
I love that you included “Africa” by Toto! I’ve heard this song many times but I’ve never considered the way it may have actually been influenced by traditional music from various African countries. Of course the main similarity I noticed was the use of the drums and shakers, although the shakers seem a bit different from the ones we saw in class because I don’t think they included the extra beads to make the buzzing sound. I really liked seeing the host of the second video illustrate how the calabash is used instrumentally. There were a lot of instruments in the video that we had learned about briefly but it was cool to see them explained further and it was genuinely so interesting to learn about some new instruments like the balancing drum. The third video was nice too, seeing how many artists incorporated their various styles into the same song. I also noticed Paul Simon in there which was ironic since we just watched his documentary this week!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love that you included "Africa" by Toto. It's a unique choice but I consider it plausible. I am really interested in the percussion aspect of music in African culture and I love that you included that. "We are the World" was also a great example to include and I love that song as well.
ReplyDeleteHey Lu! I used to be obsessed with the, "We are the World," cover. I haven't heard it in forever and had almost forgot about it, so thank you for the reminder! I really enjoyed the video you provided on African Instruments. I found it interesting how similar the instruments were, but each one had slight variations to change the sound.
